Editor-in-Chief Alessio Ascari and art directors OK-RM are pleased to announce that KALEIDOSCOPE’s summer issue is a special edition entirely devoted to art produced in (or related to) the African continent today. In a time when the once-dominant western model is collapsing, the impressive growth of Africa’s economies looks likely to continue and its cultural offer is growing more and more vibrant, exposing the international audience to an incredible offering of art, music, architecture, film, design and fashion. This issue intends to be the most up-to-date and thorough exploration of the African scene of contemporary art and culture, from Egypt to South Africa via Ethiopia and Nigeria, conducted in collaboration with a dream team of both international contributors and influential thinkers and practitioners working in and around Africa today.

Conceived in collaboration with curator Sharmini Pereira design studio OK-RM and published on the occasion of the 2011 Abraaj Capital Art prize, Footnote to a Project* is a collection of images, citations and references that support and inform the creation of the five selected artworks. Informed by the book’s title, the headline concept was to express the historical traditions of footnoting and its relationship with reading and writing. The designers adopted the use of a variety of typographic symbols traditionally used by type setters to indicate footnotes. The book takes the form of an enlarged paper back and is split into 5 equal parts — one for each artist — providing an in-depth documentation of the works through images and extended captions. The book is accompanied by two book marks intended to facilitate navigation between image and text.

Each year the Oxford English Dictionary is updated with a list of new words and senses with the aim of accurately documenting an ever evolving language. New additions are an interesting way of monitoring the sociological development of human society, with notable inclusions in the fields of Technology, Medicine and Politics alongside additions suggesting multi-cultural and multi-lingual integration.
‘In Other Words…’ is the first in a series of self published booklets conceived and designed by OK-RM. The booklet comprises of 7 new sentences exercising 16 of these new words and senses. For each word there is a definition and a brief history of its origins. An abbreviated history of the OED is included to contextualise the project.
