The exquisite paintings of record covers and spines by Los Angeles-based artist Dave Muller give us a glimpse into his cultural identity. I Like Your Music I Love Your Music presents a selection of recent works dealing with the ways in which we construct our cultural identities through music — which he represents as a network of aesthetic, social and personal exchanges. Muller’s multifaceted practice includes curating, cultural agitating, DJing and record collecting — his collection tops out at 15,000 digital albums. He is particularly well known for his multitextured installations that blend his own sound tracks with his visual work. He is represented by Blum & Poe in Los Angeles and was included in the 2004 Whitney Biennial. This volume is published in collaboration with Spain’s Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Castilla y León (MUSAC), and includes an essay by artist and Director of New York’s White Columns, Matthew Higgs.

Orienting himself firmly in the media-present, New York artist Jonathan Horowitz replays the recent past in the incarnations of our times. This reprisal occurs particularly in video works such as “Maxell,” in which the name of the now obsolete videotape company is worn down to a VHS blur, and “The Soul of Tammi Terrell,” in which 1960s footage of the eponymous pop star singing “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” is juxtaposed with Julia Roberts and Susan Sarandon’s rendition of the song in the 1998 film Stepmom. Horowitz himself makes no overt political critique, but always ensures that the work’s underlying edge is laid plainly before the viewer. Queer and ecological themes also abound, as does sly humor and a Warholian detachment. This is the first thorough survey of Horowitz’s work.

From 1994 to 2005 Peter Piller earned his living as Head of Documentation in a big Hamburg media agency, responsible for the day-to-day analysis and archiving of over 150 regional newspapers. This activity was the springboard for his artistic work, the Peter Piller Archive. The newspaper photographs were classified according to a subjective methodology involving some 80 collection categories and assigned to a typology of picture journalism that graphically manages the grotesque mundaneness of our news culture and its visual archetypes.

This publication is the most complete compilation to date of Peter Piller’s collection of found images. More than 2000 illustrations chosen from newspapers are organized in such categories as “Touching Cars,” “Sad, Hopeless, Despair, Tristesse,” “Girls Firing Arms,” “Stand-in, Protests,” or “Man and Fire.” An improbable typology of press photography of the last decades.

For the past few years Helen Mirra’s writing has been in the form of the index. Dislocated from a source text, the entries point out into the world at large. This volume relies upon John Dewey’s “Reconstruction in Philosophy” (1920). While Dewey’s book is largely about the conceptualization of ideas, Mirra’s project is a materialization of conceptualization, under the auspices of a spare poetics.

Appendix Appendix is conceived as the sequel to Ryan Gander and Stuart Bailey’s 2003 book “Appendix.” Like its predecessor, it attempts “a translation of practice” based on Ryan Gander’s recent body of work. Neither straight
documentation, nor an “artist’s book,” it pushes for a third way, editing and presenting each individual piece of work in a manner appropriate to its specific nature. In the years since “Appendix,” Gander’s work has increasingly encompassed sound and the moving image in addition to the earlier objects and installations. This shift will directly affect the form of Appendix Appendix.

Born in 1976, Ryan Gander lives and works in London and Amsterdam. His photographs, films, installations and sculptures draw on multiple layers of facts and fiction. He has exhibited in the USA and throughout England and Europe.

The English-born Stuart Bailey (*1973) has forged a formidible creative base for himself in Amsterdam where he has benefited greatly from Dutch design tradition. Since his arrival in the Netherlands, he has become a steady contributor to the art and design culture as a writer, critic, editor, and graphic designer.

Peter Saville Estate traces the development of designer, artist and cultural observer Peter Saville, from his groundbreaking work for Factory Records in the late 1970s, though to his most recent explorations of art and design’s role in the highly commodified, visually hyper-literate early 21st century. Taking Saville’s 2005 exhibition at the Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst Zürich as its starting point, the book features essays by Michael Bracewell and Heike Munder, alongside personal responses to Saville’s work from artists Slater Bradley, Liam Gillick, Steven Gontarski, Thomas Grünfeld, Robert Longo, Sarah Morris, Oliver Payne and Nick Relph, Sean Snyder, Wolfgang Tillmans, Kelley Walker and T.J. Wilcox.

Peter Saville Estate is not a conventional account of Saville’s professional practice, but collects together work, reference material and ephemera from his archive to form an illuminating and highly personal topography of the life and working methods of one of the most influential designers of the last 30 years.

Born in Manchester (U.K.) in 1955, Peter Saville studied graphic design at Manchester Polytechnic. He found early inspiration in the elegantly ordered aesthetic of Jan Tschichold, the German-born book and type designer who was to become the chief propagandist for the New Typography. In 1979 he co-founded Factory Records (with Tony Wilson), and in the following year he co-designed the famous Haçienda nightclub.

The photographs of Los Angeles-based artist Charlie White (*1972) explore the complex social and psychological realities of American culture. American Minor delves into an important subtext of White’s work: the American teen. By cataloguing studio archives, film stills, animation stills, scripts, and photographs, the book highlights the artist’s investigations into the representation of the American teen girl. Mark Leckey’s best-known video, Fiorucci Made Me Hardcore (1999), is a 15-minute journey into urban British youth culture from the mid 1970s to the early 1990s. Leckey’s presentation of twenty years of dance hall material does not, however, result in a documentary work: the video is rather a visual essay with hedonistic promises of club culture, the birth of funky chic, and the cultural shift of the rise of Acid House. Active in music production through donAtella, a glam-trash duo formed by the artist and Ed Liq, Leckey also makes live performances, CDs, and sound installations. Plunged into the lowbrow of culture, Leckey is one of the most perceptive cultural readers of Western societies.

This publication is the first to be dedicated to his work. Conceived as a source book of his working methods and fields of interest, it has been edited by the artist and features images of his main productions, as well as a wealth of other visual materials he has gathered through the years. In addition to original contributions, it includes reprints of texts from Michel Leiris and the 19th century-writer Walter Pater, as well as song lyrics. Designed by NORM in close collaboration with the artist, this printed project takes the shape of a hardbound drawing book, accentuating the idea of a point of departure rather than arrival.

The book was realized on the occasion of Leckey’s solo exhibition at the Museum für Gegenwartskunst Migros in Zurich, a co-edition with König Books London.
